Description

Amazon EC2 provides various purchasing options to help you manage costs effectively based on your specific requirements. One key option is Reserved Instances (RI). Think of RIs not as physical instances, but more like a pricing plan or subscription. When you opt for an RI, you’re essentially committing to a particular type and amount of compute capacity in a specific region for a fixed period – either 1 or 3 years. In return for this commitment, you receive a significant discount on your EC2 costs, similar to how a subscription service might offer lower rates for a longer-term commitment. This approach is particularly cost-effective for workloads with predictable usage patterns.

Throughout the lab, you’ll gain experience on how to purchase a Reserved Instand as well as understand the concept of this purchasing option that will empower you to make informed decisions when it comes to adopting Reserved Instances.

Lab Steps

Purchasing a Reserved Instance (Mock)

1. Navigate to the search bar, type “EC2”, and click to open the EC2 Dashboard.

2. In the navigation pane, choose Reserved Instances under the Instances.

3. Click the Purchase Reserved Instances button and a window will prompt.

4. Filter the required details for the reserved instance to be purchased and click search. If you have found the desired instance type, add it to the cart, then select View Cart For this lab, follow the configuration below:
– Platform: Linux
– Tenancy: Default
– Offering class: Standard
– Instance type: t3.micro
– Term: 1 month to 12 months
– Payment option: All Upfront

5. To see a summary of the Reserved Instances that you selected, choose View cart.

6. If Order On is Now, the purchase is completed immediately after you choose Order all. To queue a purchase, choose Now and select a date. You can select a different date for each eligible offering in the cart. The purchase is queued until 00:00 UTC on the selected date.

7. To complete the order, choose Order All. Please note that this lab is only a mock purchase therefore you cannot proceed in ordering it.
