Misleading Question and Answer #2 – Kendra

A legal firm has a large collection of scanned legal documents and case files in PDF format. They want a semantic search system that allows lawyers to easily find specific images and relevant content. The system should analyze image content, extract text, and identify key elements to minimize manual intervention.
I get what you’re trying to do here…however, when the answers each provide a part of the solution…and their explanations say that…the explanation for Kendra is that “While Kendra can be integrated into a search system to help locate relevant content, it does not perform image analysis or text extraction”…….so, you’re admitting it DOES offer help with the proposed solution…but I know you’re thinking it doesn’t help with what the last sentence specifically asks for.
Leaving in that the intended app is a SEARCH SYSTEM in the description….and/or leaving Kendra in as an option is getting away from the purpose of the question and is more approaching this being a trick question.
Suggestions: 1. don’t make the workload a search system in the description, 2. take Kendra out of the possible answers or 3. make this a 3 choice question
So, maybe the point of this question is to have students learn that the last sentence in the question is the most important? If that’s the case, explain that in the answer explanations!

Hello Moose,
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. We appreciate your detailed observations and the effort you’ve put into helping us refine this question. Let us clarify the reasoning behind the question design and its correct answers.
The scenario highlights the need for services that analyze image content, extract text, and identify key elements with minimal operational management. While Amazon Kendra can certainly contribute to a broader search system, its functionality does not directly address the specific requirements for text extraction and image analysis as stated in the last sentence of the question. The inclusion of Kendra is intended to prompt critical thinking about which services are most aligned with the given requirements, emphasizing a focus on services that fulfill the stated needs end-to-end.
The correct answers, Amazon Textract and Amazon Rekognition, were chosen because:
- Amazon Textract excels at extracting text and structured data from scanned PDFs, aligning directly with the requirement to “extract text and identify key elements.”
- Amazon Rekognition provides robust image analysis capabilities, enabling the identification of specific images or text within images, which is critical to the described use case.
We understand that the inclusion of Kendra could feel misleading, especially since the scenario mentions a “semantic search system.” However, the intent was not to make the question a trick but rather to challenge students to carefully align the solutions with the specific requirements outlined, particularly in the last sentence. That said, we agree that adjustments can make this question clearer.
Your feedback is incredibly valuable, and we’re committed to updating the question to make it clearer while preserving its learning objectives. Thank you again for your constructive input!
