    In the following question:

Due to a high number of visitors, many customers are timing out from your website which is running in an Auto Scaling group of EC2 instances behind an ELB. Upon checking, the Auto Scaling group has stopped adding new instances to your group.

    đź”´Cost Optimization
    âś…Performance
    đź”´Security
    đź”´Fault Tolerance
    âś…Service Limits

The correct answers are in green marks.

May I ask why Fault Tolerance is not an acceptable answer if it also tackles the topic of service limits? I refer below to the answer explanation from the question.

Cost Optimization – recommendations that can potentially save you money by highlighting unused resources and opportunities to reduce your bill.

Security – identification of security settings that could make your AWS solution less secure.

Fault Tolerance – recommendations that help increase the resiliency of your AWS solution by highlighting redundancy shortfalls, current service limits, and over-utilized resources.

Performance – recommendations that can help to improve the speed and responsiveness of your applications.

Service Limits – recommendations that will tell you when service usage is more than 80% of the service limit.

    Hi Don,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this item.

With regards to fault tolerance, this defines how resilient or the availability of your application. Since in the given scenario, auto-scaling already stopped adding new instances. This means that there won’t be any recommendations needed from Trusted Advisor regarding fault tolerance because auto scaling is already configured. Now, if it can’t add new instances, maybe there are other problems such as service limits/quotas. According to the documentation of Trusted Advisor, “Service quotas are the maximum number of resources that you can create in an AWS account.” Our team will take a look at this item and we’ll try to polish to make it more comprehensible for our students.
