Hi Leonard,

Azure SQL database is the platform as a service (PaaS) database engine offering of Microsoft Azure. Azure SQL in Azure virtual machines is the infrastructure as a service (IaaS) offering of Microsoft Azure. They are different offerings for different use cases.

With Azure backup, you can only backup SQL servers in Azure virtual machines. Please refer to this for the full list of Azure services that can be backed up by Azure backup.
