You are correct that the new data disk was created and attached after the backup was taken, meaning it is not part of the recovery point. After a Replace Existing restore operation, the disk is detached from the VM but not deleted — it remains in the resource group with the log reports still intact. Therefore, the correct action is to re-attach the existing data disk to the virtual machine, not to copy the log reports again.
We have also removed the claim that the local admin password is preserved after a Replace Existing restore, as this behavior is not explicitly documented by Microsoft for Windows VMs and should not have been stated as fact.
