Reduce cost of data transfer between instances in two AZs?

How to reduce cost of data transfer between instances in two AZs, assuming they are in the same region?

Actually I just found out myself…

Data transfer is free if it’s within same region, same AZ and uses private IP address.

However if instances are on different AZs, it’s not free and using private IP address costs less than using public IP or Elastic IP addresses.
